Celebrate 14 years with Halo

Hey there, Halo friends,

It's April. And April at Halo Studio is a very special month. We're celebrating 14 years of business. And you know what I feel like doing? Celebrating!!!

Celebrate Halo. Celebrate the team. Celebrate you and all of our Halo clients - clients who come once a year, once a month, or even once a week. Celebrate our loyal clients who make our job really special.

Whether it's with a listening ear, a stellar review, a coffee, or even sometimes your patience. I appreciate all of you. It's truly a gift to say that I love what I do. And I do, as does everyone at Halo.

Community Spotlight

By Julia Mongeau

You’re a lucky person if you’ve been able to turn your passion into a career. That’s what happened to our April Spotlight, Mel Madden, when she took up photography.

Fresh off of her recent weekend trip to New Orleans, I chatted with Mel about how she got started, and what she wants to do next.

Mel is a Melrose local, mother of three, and lifestyle photographer. She’s been in the photography business for 12 years. As an art minor in college, she liked to explore different creative mediums, but found her calling in photography - it was the perfect creative outlet that could also provide a stream of income.

Mel is an extrovert who loves meeting new people, so photography also helps her make connections with people in the community. She currently does family shoots and newborn portraits, as well as portraits for graduating seniors, but with her own unique take and style.

“I’m really just trying to take what someone else’s view of something is and give it my own twist,” said Mel.

Her photography has a softness to it. She doesn’t typically shoot crisp images, but rather aims to give them a soft and moody lightness about them.

“I want my photography to be a collaborative experience,” said Mel. This can include picking a special location for the shoot, or selecting a wardrobe that really reflects the subject’s uniqueness.

When taking photos, sometimes the subject of the photo might appear tense or nervous. This is where her outgoing and kind personality comes in handy. Mel wants her clients to feel like they can truly let their guard down around her and be their full selves. That way, she can really capture the essence of that person in her photos.

“Being able to bring that person out of their shell is really impactful for me,” said Mel.

Lately, Mel has been expanding her craft and doing more product and branding work. She’ll work with local businesses and take images for the business’s website, social media, or print marketing materials. Her photos can really make a business stand out.

Being an entrepreneur is no easy feat. You have to be your own marketer, scheduler, editor, and more, all while trying to find a balance between work and life. After 12 years, Mel has created a photography business that’s sustainable for the long-term. Starting July 1, Mel will transition to her photography business full time.

Think back to when you were younger and people would ask you what you want to be when you grow up. Mel now has an answer.

“I know what I would do - I found my passion and made it into a successful business,” said Mel.
